guessing that you only have one hard disk with one partition so the first boot option should boot the computer. You can't break anything trying the diskette, If this method fails you will still be able to boot the computer as you do now, so there is little risk of damaging the Windows installation.

The recovery partition and installation routine was accessed via a special boot loader in the primary partition's boot record. When you installed Vista cleanly, you rewrote the master boot record and the primary partition boot record, eliminating access to the bloatware partition and the installation routine for it

The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; and then press C to create a new partition and specify the size (important since you'll want unallocated space for the second installation).

As the BIOS supports LBA-Mode, I hoped that I might be able to install OS/2 on a partition beyond the magic 504 MB borderline. Yes, you can install froom the XP CD-ROM: Boot from the CD ROM, then start to go through the steps to *install* XP. Don't bother with the 'Recovery Console' - even if you simply want to re-partition at this point - as it won't work. If you simply want to re-partition, boot from the XP CD-ROM go through the motions

The short of the long (an afternoon's worth) is that I had to - append brokenmodules=pata_ali in the kernel appends - select kernel safe-mode - assign a swap "file" instead of a swap partition and this file had to go on a preformatted non-swap partition that is not targetted for installation.
